Connecting Greater Bendigo: Vision & Principles

Client: City of Bendigo (supported by Victorian State Govt)
Location: Bendigo

Hello City worked alongside MR Cagney, Urban Trans and Live EcoLogical to deliver the vision and principles for Bendigo’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy, Connecting Bendigo.

Our role was to inspire the team about innovative approaches to transport and land use taken by cities around the world, facilitate the conversation with the local community and stakeholders about the complex issues involved in big picture planning and develop a shared vision and set of supporting principles.

To invite the people to Bendigo to get involved in planning the future of their region we developed a new brand for the Integrated Transport & Land Use Strategy (ITLUS) that re-imagined the project as Connecting Greater Bendigo, and produced a concise booklet that communicated the key facts & issues in a jargon-free and highly accessible way with engaging illustrations and a low SMOG readability score.

In order to explore the challenges of long-term strategic planning that works for everyone, we developed innovative new engagement approaches that explored the inherent complexities including:

  • a Transport and Land Use pub-style mythbusting quiz
  • Decision Trees that enabled participants to understand and articulate trade-offs
  • Values Ranking
  • Mayor for a Day decision-making that asked participants to consider & resolve competing priorities

The values that are included within the vision seem clear, concise, realistic and achievable – and most importantly an accurate reflection of community opinion.
