With some of the Fools for the City mob, Hello City turned a car parking space into a Public Reading Room for PARK(ing) Day this year. PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks and generally riff with ideas around public, streets, cars & parks.
Besides providing comfortable armchairs with a persian rug & bookshelves filled with interesting books, people were able to make themselves a nice cup of of tea in the kitchenette of the little teardrop caravan or help themselves to a cold drink from the esky. It absolutely bucketed down for us this year, but in true Melbourne style that didn’t seem to deter anyone from having a good time.
We also offered people the chance to share their hard-won wisdom with their fellow man & woman. People were invited to put their hand into a Tip Jar & pull out an envelope at random. Each envelope contained a piece of advice. Mine was a pearl from Benjamin Franklin: “Never ruin an apology with an excuse.” After soaking in the wisdom that chance bestowed upon them, participants could write their own advice to put in an envelope & place in the Tip Jar to be selected by the next person.
The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.
