The strength of the positioning is that is really understands what makes Austin unique – that the ability of the city to attract things that are edgy, alternative and marginalised in a conservative state is also its selling point. Austin is a global centre for live music and creative pursuits of all kinds. By understanding the link between tolerance of difference and creativity, the Keep Austin Weird positioning has helped to celebrate and cement its creative role as a social and economic driver for the city. The celebration of difference, particularly in relation to unique small businesses, has since been taken up by other cities like Portland, Oregon who can also differentiate themselves in a global market by being a just a little weird. What Zombies can teach us about the power of the s What Zombies can teach us about the power of the sweet spot. We’re big believers in the power of the sweet spot, and the advantage of seeking balance over stability. Derrida has a cool way of thinking about the relationship between the sweet spot and radical change. The first part of the concept is the idea of the undecidable. Perhaps Derrida’s best example of an undecidable is the zombie (after the classic Romero style). Derrida claims that besides eating brains, the reason that zombies are freaky is because they are undecidable. He points out that no matter how much we try we can’t place a zombie into a nice neat binary category – a zombie is not master or servant, male or female, alive or dead, it’s undecidable. “They show where classificatory order breaks down: they mark the limits of order.” He then goes on to speculate that the reason an undecidable is so unsettling is that most of the structures of our society are based on understanding the world in terms of binary oppositions – right & wrong, black & white, male & female, winner & loser. Because these categories are so fundamental – something that is neither/nor and undecidable and that can’t be easily categorised, no matter how small, serves to shake the foundations of established order. Undecidables occupy a sweet spot – if of a particularly unsettling kind. It’s such a great example of transformation around healthy food, the environment, community building and public space. The community team has created productive community gardens throughout Todmorden in Lancashire in Northern England, on underused tracts of public land, nature strips, kerbsides and shopfronts. Incredible Edible Todmorden started as a couple of patches and has spread throughout the town providing free, fresh food to the townspeople and to local shops, through the work of an army of local community volunteers. The approach has become a movement with more than 30 other towns around the world adopting the Incredible Edible methodology.
